Please join us for our second event of the Fall 2026 cycle. Event description from the author:
Roman writers often condemned luxury in domestic art. Drawing on repairs to the decor of Villa A at Oplontis, one of the grandest complexes on the Bay of Naples, Dr. Andrew Crocker explores how older, austere styles and inexpensive local pigments could become a deliberate performance of Roman humility and virtue.
About the speaker:
Dr. Andrew Crocker is Assistant Professor of Art History in the Department of Art History and Museum Studies at Florida Southern College. His research focuses on the social and political significance of Roman art, especially the role of art in negotiating identity and status in the Roman provinces.
