The Archaeology of Heroes: From Warriors at Troy to Local Protectors
November 20 @ 7:30 pm - 8:30 pm
AIA Society: New Brunswick
Lecturer: Matthew Sears
We know about Greek epic heroes from the stories preserved in Homer’s poetry and their reception in modern pop culture, from Jorge Rivera-Herrans’s Epic: The Musical to Chistropher Nolan’s The Odyssey. This talk explores the archaeological evidence for heroes in communities throughout the Greek world at the time the Iliad and Odyssey were composed. The importance of these figures in the everyday lives of Greeks in the 8th-7th centuries BCE, including the physical presence of their shrines and tombs, illuminates the context in which epic poetry flourished.
