The Archaeological Institute of America New Brunswick Society is hosting a virtual lecture and welcomes AIA members, the university communities, the general public and those from around the world interested in the AIA Lecture Series to join us as Dr. William Kerr from the Department of Classics and Ancient History at University of New Brunswick presents a fascinating lecture entitled:
“The Emperor’s Jubilee on Roman Coins”
Scarcity of sources and sheer uneventfulness combine to make the reign the emperor of Antoninus Pius (AD 138-161) the vaguest of the “good emperors”. In such cases, the historian can sometimes turn to the Roman mint, and the messages and images stamped on the coins it poured out. In this case, we have a bonus: Antoninus Pius was the first emperor to systematically date his coinage. Hence statistical numismatics can elucidate certain periods of his reign. The paper focuses on the year 148, celebrated on coins and elsewhere not only as the tenth anniversary of Pius’ reign but as the 900th jubilee of Rome herself, dating from her supposed foundation in 753 BC. Patterns of coin production and distribution can help us to understand the aims proposed, and the stresses faced, by the Roman mint at this time and later in Pius’ reign.
