Project Description:
ArcheoPopulonia is an archaeological research and field school project led by the University of Pisa at the ancient site of Populonia, one of the most significant Etruscan and Roman centers along the Tyrrhenian coast of Italy. The project focuses on the excavation and study of a Roman bath complex, integrating stratigraphic excavation with architectural analysis, landscape archaeology, and material culture studies. Students receive hands-on training in excavation techniques, stratigraphic recording, surveying, and finds processing under close academic supervision. The field school combines rigorous scientific research with high-level archaeological training in a historically significant context.
Period(s) of Occupation: Roman archaeology, Late Republican period
Project Size: 1-24 participants
Minimum Length of Stay for Volunteers: 12 days (1 session)
Minimum Age: 18 years
Experience Required: No prior experience in archaeological excavation is required to participate in the Summer School. The program is designed to welcome both students with their first experiences in archaeology and participants with more advanced training, ensuring that each person follows a learning path appropriate to their starting level.
Room and Board Arrangements:
For the entire duration of the Summer School, participants will be provided with comfortable accommodation equipped with all essential amenities.
Students will share multi-bed rooms in apartments with bathrooms, kitchens, and laundry facilities.
Meals will also be included and will be prepared taking into account the dietary needs of each participant, including allergies, intolerances, or personal preferences.
Academic Credit:
Participation in the Summer School allows for the possibility of earning university credits (ECTS), up to a maximum of 3.
The exact number of credits and the validation procedures depend on the regulations of the home university; therefore, interested students are advised to check in advance with their academic office or contact person.
All participants will, in any case, receive a certificate of participation, useful for university credit recognition or to enhance their curriculum.
