Project Description:
The ‘Fonmon Castle Landscape Archaeology Project’ is a long-term research project focused on the estate of Fonmon Castle in the Vale of Glamorgan. The project has been running since 2021, and our work to date has led to the discovery of over fifteenth archaeological sites. These include the Llancadle South early medieval cemetery, where our important findings have received significant international media attention. Excavation is currently focusing on the cemetery site, which dates to the late 5th to 7th centuries CE and which prior to our work was suffering from damage from agriculture.
Ethical treatment of human remains is central to all we do, and all participants will receive training and instruction in the careful and considerate excavation and recording of burials, including photogrammetry, 3D laser scanning, and sampling for pathogens. Participants will also receive training in Single Context and Recording techniques, including drawing, photography, and GNSS survey, and post-excavation cleaning and processing of skeletons and finds. Teaching in the field will be supplemented by workshops and practical exercises. There will also be opportunities to visit important Roman and medieval sites in the wider region.
