Purpose: To support archaeological research and fieldwork projects on the African continent conducted by graduate students or post-doctoral fellows.
Requirements:
- Applicants must be conducting active research or be planning to conduct research on the African continent.
- Applicants from outside of Africa must be current AIA members at the Graduate or Professional level. Applicants from Africa may apply without an active AIA membership but will be required to become a member if selected to receive the Fellowship. This cost can be included in the proposed budget as part of the application. Fellowship recipients who already hold PhDs are required to become AIA members at the Professional level. Recipients that are graduate students are required to become AIA student members in order to accept the fellowship.
- Applicant must be affiliated with an institution of higher learning at an accredited graduate-level or postdoctoral program in archaeology or a related discipline.
- If the project requires a permit, applicants should demonstrate the ability to obtain a permit or include a letter of support with the application from the primary permit holder(s). Awardees must have the permit in hand or have made alternative arrangements with the AIA office before funds are disbursed.
- Awardees must make a formal report to the AIA at the conclusion of the award period. This report should include a brief illustrated summary, written for a general audience, that can be published on the AIA’s website.
- After the tenure of their fellowship, recipients are expected to submit a poster or paper abstract to the AIA Program Committee within two years, in order be considered for participation in the AIA Annual Meeting (submissions will be evaluated in the general pool, and acceptance is not guaranteed).
- For projects that generate digital data, publication of the dataset is especially encouraged, ideally in an open-access format.

As part of the Archaeological Institute of America’s ongoing commitment to fieldwork and families, reasonable line items for the care of dependent and elderly family members are allowable expenses for AIA grants, fellowships, and scholarships.
