Buffavento Castle

Kyrenia Mountains, Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus (De facto), Cyprus

Category: Archaeological Landscapes

Here is Κάστρο Βουφαβέντο/Buffavento Kalesi (Buffavento Castle) overlooking the northern coast of Cyprus. On a clear day, you can see the southern coast of Turkey. Locals used the castle beginning in the Byzantine period until the 14th century when the Republic of Venice took over the island. It was built for strategic defense on steep mountain crags in the Kyrenia Mountains at a conjunction between the nearby St. Hilarion and Kantara castles.
