Aztec Ruins National Monument

Aztec, New Mexico, United States

Category: Archaeological Landscapes

Not built by Aztecs, but by Ancestral Puebloan people who lived here centuries before the Aztec empire prospered. Anglo settlers mistakenly attributed the site to the Aztecs, hence the name given. Designated a National Park in 1923 and a World Heritage site in 1987.
