Landscape: Ancient Thera, Greece Inhabited for around one thousand years beginning in the ninth century BCE, Ancient Thera is sited on a ridge of Mt. Messavouno on Santorini with the modern settlements visible far below. The city was founded by colonists from Sparta. Constructed of local limestone, the city contained residential and commercial areas as well as a temple district.
