Cistern below the Sanctuary of Apollo Karneios in Ancient Thera Inhabited for around one thousand years beginning in the ninth century BCE, Ancient Thera is sited on a ridge of Mt. Messavouno on Santorini. The city was founded by colonists from Sparta. Constructed of local limestone, the city contained residential and commercial areas as well as a temple district.
