Salineras de Maras

Maras, Cusco region, Peru

Category: Archaeological Landscapes

The salt mines at Maras in Peru have been in operation for more than 500 years, starting in pre-Inca times (the Wari civilization) through the Inca period and continuing to present day. The man-made salt pans allow the harvesting of underground salt deposits from prehistoric salt lakes, producing Peruvian pink salt.
