The Assyrian Siege of Jerusalem: History as Metaphor and Simile
In 701 BCE, the Assyrian army besieged the city of Jerusalem. Different narratives describing this siege are preserved both in the Hebrew Bible and also in the Assyrian king Sennacherib’s own royal annals. In this lecture, we will look at the Judahite and Assyrian accounts of the siege, focusing on their differences. Comparing the two accounts, we will ask not just if we can determine “what actually happened,” but also why the ancient scribes on either side of the conflict narrated their histories of this same event in these different ways.
