AIA-Richmond Society Tours National Battlefield Park with NPS Historian

On International Archaeology Day, the AIA-Richmond Society took a walking tour of the grounds at Rural Plains with National Park Service Historian Robert E.L. Krick.  Krick explained findings and future research projects for the site as well as plans for conservation.  The Shelton House at Rural Plains constructed in about 1723, and currently the National Park Service is looking for the footprint of the outbuildings and possibly an earlier residence.  The structure served as the Union Headquarters for 3 days during the Battle of Totopotomoy Creek in 1864, and suffered some damage from cannon fire.
