The Making of Victory: Images of Arches and Trophies in Roman Art

November 4, 2022 @ 4:30 pm EDT

Department of Art & Archaeology seminar room (Green Hall 3-S-5)
1 Nassau St
Princeton, NJ 08540 United States

AIA Society: Princeton

Lecturer: Francesco de Angelis

Arches and trophies are not simply among the main monuments of Roman art and architecture: they also are a popular subject of both official and private imagery in antiquity; representations of victory monuments feature in a wide range of scenes and genres, from state reliefs and coins to lamps and cake molds. Interestingly, however, these images never reproduce the monuments in all their details. This lecture will examine the peculiarities of the rendering of arches and trophies, and will argue that these images are often conceived as self-reflexive commentaries on the nature of celebrative monuments.
