Joseph A. Tainter is Professor with the Department of Environment and Society, College of Natural Resources at Utah State University. He received his degrees from the University of California at Santa Barbara (B.A.) and Northwestern University (M.A. and Ph.D.), and his research interests are the sustainability and collapse of complex societies and systems (including Roman and New World). His best-known work is The Collapse of Complex Societies (1988); more recent publications include Supply-Side Sustainability (with T.F. Allen and T.W. Hoekstra, 2003) and “Energy, Complexity, and Sustainability in the 21st Century” (forthcoming, for Energy 2100).
