AIA Lecturer/Host: Tevfik Emre Şerifoğlu

Dr. Tevfik Emre Şerifoğlu is an archaeologist and Assyriologist specializing in the ancient civilizations of Anatolia and the Near East. He is the Chairman of the Şirince Archaeological Association and was formerly the Head of the Archaeology Department at Bitlis Eren University. A specialist in landscape archaeology, Emre’s fieldwork spans Cilicia, northern Mesopotamia, central Anatolia, and the Turkish Black Sea, as well as northern Iraq. After graduating from Bilkent University, he completed his MPhil and PhD at the University of Cambridge. Emre has held visiting and senior research positions at the University of Oxford (RLAHA), the University of Chicago’s Institute for the Study of Ancient Cultures (ISAC), Uppsala University, the University of Leicester, The American Center of Research (ACOR) in Amman, and Koç University’s Research Center for Anatolian Civilizations (ANAMED). Following a successful AIA tour of southeastern Türkiye last year, Emre is eager to return and share his firsthand knowledge of the sites and ancient terrains that define this journey. While his primary expertise lies in the Bronze and Iron Age cultures of the Near East, his deep field experience allows him to provide rich, multi-layered insights into the entire chronological evolution of the landscape, from its prehistoric foundations to its later historic eras and cultural heritage.

“It is a pleasure to once again join the AIA on this unique itinerary. The archaeology of the vast region spanning from the Cilician plains to northern Mesopotamia and its highlands offers a rare, multi-layered look at human history that continues to inspire my work. I am eager to share my experiences and insights with our participants as we explore these extraordinary prehistoric and historic landscapes together.”
