  • This custom-designed itinerary is carefully paced to give you the chance to thoroughly explore with expert leaders many of the greatest archaeological sites in Peru plus provide independent time to relax, catch your breath, and enjoy our wonderful hotels, or to join our leaders for optional hikes and excursions. Accommodations and meals have been carefully selected.
  • Travel and learn with AIA lecturer/host Professor James Kus, who has spent decades conducting research and leading special tours to Peru. He is acquainted with many Peruvian museum directors and archaeologists and he will introduce us whenever possible.
  • A professional tour manager and expert local guides handle all the logistics for drives, flights, checking in at hotels, etc.
  • Enjoy an itinerary carefully designed in cooperation with Professor Kus to include many special features such as a behind-the-scenes tour at Lima’s Larco Herrera Museum.
  • Explore the cities of Cuzco, perhaps the oldest continuously occupied city in the Americas; and Lima, including the catacombs of its 17th century San Francisco church.
  • Admire the magnificent fortress of Sacsayhuaman, whose stones remain a miracle of Inca engineering; and the ruins of Ollantaytambo, the best remaining example of Inca town planning.
  • Spend two full days at Machu Picchu to experience in-depth its magnificent, rambling ruins that lay hidden from the Spanish conquistadors and for centuries thereafter. Optional excursions include two different hikes or birding and botanical walks.
  • Tour several Moche period sites including Huaca del Sol, the largest mud-brick structure of the New World; and Huaca de la Luna, which boasts spectacular murals.
  • Marvel at Chan Chan, one of South America’s largest pre-Columbian sites.
  • Visit the Royal Tombs of Sipan Museum, housing finds from one of the richest known sites in the Americas, as well as the famed site of Sipan itself.
