Voyage to the Colonial South: Richmond to Savannah
Dates: May 25, 2013 - June 4, 2013
(11 days)
Tour Leader: James Delgado
The waters we sail through and the ports we visit on this cruise have a profound Civil War naval history, from seacoast forts to sunken warships, some of which have been the center of extensive archaeological investigation and recovery. We will visit the site of the fabled battle between the ironclads Monitor and Merrimac, and tour the USS Monitor Center at The Mariners’ Museum in nearby Newport News, where the engines, guns, and turret of Monitor are undergoing conservation. In Wilmington, we will visit historic Fort Fisher, site of a major naval battle, and in Charleston, we will tour the Warren Lasch Center, where the Confederate Civil War submarine H. L. Hunley, the first submarine to sink another ship in combat, is undergoing conservation. A behind-the-scenes tour will get us close up to learn about this amazing craft, its crew—whose remains were discovered inside the cramped quarters of the Hunley—and its ongoing preservation.
