In Richmond, embark Yorktown and overnight aboard ship. (D)
Sunday, May 26 - RICHMOND | BERKELEY and WESTOVER PLANTATIONS | RICHMOND
From Richmond drive to the historic Berkeley Plantation. Set on a pastoral landscape atop a hill that overlooks the James River, the mansion is surrounded by five terraced gardens. Continue to Westover Plantation, a Georgian style mansion built in the 18th century. In the afternoon, tour Richmond, including the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts. (B, L, D)
Monday, May 27 - NEWPORT NEWS | COLONIAL WILLIAMSBURG or FORT MONROE
Arrive in Newport News, at the center of the historic Hampton Roads, and visit Fort Monroe, also known as Freedom’s Fortress, a haven for escaped slaves and key player in the Battle of the Ironclads. At the nearby Maritime Museum, explore the interactive displays and artifacts of the USS Monitor Center. Alternatively, take an excursion to Colonial Williamsburg and enjoy a guided tour. (B, L, D)

Wednesday, May 29 - MOREHEAD CITY or NEW BERN, North Carolina
Morehead City was home to large encampments by both armies during the Civil War. Visit the History Place, with its exhibits relating to the Civil War, as well as Fort Macon, a Confederate garrison. Alternatively, drive to historic New Bern (settled in 1710) and visit Tryon Palace and its elegant gardens. (B, L, D)
Thursday, May 30 - WILMINGTON or FORT FISHER
Visit Airlie Gardens, boasting 67 acres of formal, woodland gardens. Alternatively, drive to Fort Fisher, a Confederate stronghold that fell to the Union in 1865 after a massive assault. View artifacts from the Modern Greece, a blockade runner which sank off the coast of the fort. In the afternoon enjoy a tour of historic Wilmington. (B, L, D)
Friday, May 31 & Saturday, June 1 - CHARLESTON, South Carolina
Tour Charleston’s extensive historic district, including the 18th-century Heyward-Washington House. Tour the Warren Lasch Center, where the Confederate Civil War submarine H.L. Hunley, the first submarine to sink another ship in combat, is undergoing conservation, or drive to Middleton Place, a carefully preserved 18thcentury plantation. Also visit Drayton Hall, one of the oldest surviving examples of Georgian Palladian architecture in the United States, or take the ferry to Fort Sumter to see the site where the Civil War began. Sunday, June 2 - BEAUFORT
South Carolina’s Lowcountry flourished on the cotton trade, making Beaufort one of the wealthiest cities in the country after Independence. Tour this elegant city, with its magnificent antebellum homes and shady lanes. (B, L, D)
Monday, June 3 - SAVANNAH, Georgia
Tour Georgia’s oldest city, with its fine avenues and open spaces—planned by James Oglethorpe in 1733—forming the cornerstone of the three-square-mile Historic District. Explore this renowned district, the largest in the country, which features over 1,000 Federal and Regency buildings and 21 verdant squares brimming with azaleas, gardenias, cabbage palmettos, English yews, giant oaks, and other lush vegetation. Enjoy time at leisure to explore the lovely streets and squares. Overnight aboard ship. (B, L, D)
