Journey in the footsteps of heroic Jason and the Argonauts to the homeland of the Golden Fleece, and beyond! Georgia and Armenia, abutting each other on a mountainous strip of land between the Black and Caspian Seas, are fabulously rich sources of ancient artifacts, ageless architecture, and potent ruins. Although less familiar to travelers, these countries are highly acclaimed among archaeologists, anthropologists, and lovers of antiquity. Considering their geography, it’s not surprising that traces of early human settlements are found on nearly every strategic hill. In fact, you will encounter the site of the earliest hominid bones ever unearthed in Europe; Vani, a sacred city of the Kingdom of Colchis, which was overseen by mythical King Aeëtes, sacrificer of the golden ram; plus explore the ruins of ancient settlements and fortresses; early churches, cathedrals, monasteries; and intriguing cave towns; including five UNESCO World Heritage sites. Your entire adventure will be underscored by the hospitable table traditions, savory cuisine, and deep red wines for which the region is known. Since you will be in the neighborhood, don’t miss Azerbaijan’s capital, Baku, on the optional extension. Humans have lived in the area of Baku since the Neolithic period, and have left intriguing evidence of their habitation.
