For thousands of years, wave after wave of civilizations have passed over the Mediterranean, leaving their mark on art, architecture, language, culture, and cuisine. On this exceptional voyage aboard a lovely, 26-cabin vessel with archaeologist Barbara Tsakirgis, you will visit destinations that embody the complex history of the Mediterranean: the delightful islands of Sicily, Sardinia, Corsica, and Elba; as well as Pompeii and Pisa on the Italian mainland. Admire the magnificent 5th-century B.C. Doric Greek temple at Segesta; Sardinia’s ancient, conical dwellings, emblematic of its prehistoric Nuraghic civilization, as well as its incredibly clear turquoise waters and striking rock formations; Bonifacio’s lovely medieval architecture hovering at the edge of Corsica’s soaring, seaside limestone cliffs; Pompeii, one of the world’s best examples of a Roman city, both frozen-in-time and destroyed by the eruption of the Mount Vesuvius volcano in A.D. 79; and more.
