A Tour of the Clinton and Kalamazoo Canal

October 21, 2023 @ 10:00 am - 4:00 pm

Rochester Hills Museum at Van Hoosen Farm
1005 Van Hoosen Rd
Rochester Hills, MI 48306 United States

AIA Society: Ann Arbor

Michigan’s first internal improvement project dates back to 1837–a proposed canal that ran straight from Lake St. Clair to Lake Michigan, cutting across the Lower Peninsula. Retrace its route from MT. Clemens to Rochester–as far as it got–see remains of one of the locks and learn the history of this manmade waterway that endured as a millrace long after its use for transportation ended. Bring a bag lunch, water, and dress for the weather. Participants will drive to multiple locations throughout the tour and walk along sections of the canal. Cost: $15 for members of the Rochester Hills Museum; $20 for non-members. Register on the site and bring the fee to the tour start. Meet at the old Clinton Township Hall, located in the Historic Village just south of the Clinton-Macomb Library, 40700 Romeo Plank Road, Clinton Twp., MI 48038.
