Along the magnificent Aegean coast of Turkey are some of the world’s most spectacular Greek, Hellenistic, and Roman temples, theaters, and stadiums; early Byzantine churches, Ottoman palaces, and outstanding museums. Highlights of this custom-designed program include archaeologist Nicolle Hirschfeld, who has received rave reviews on past AIA tours of Turkey; Istanbul, the Byzantine capital for 1,000 years and Ottoman capital for 500; legendary Troy, site of the epic siege in Homer’s Iliad; Assos, Aristotle’s retreat, with breathtaking views of the Aegean; the spectacular ruins at Pergamon, one of western Asia’s greatest ancient cities, established by the great ancient practitioner of medicine, Galen; Ephesus, the best preserved classical city in the eastern Mediterranean, visited by St. Paul; Priene, the oldest- and best-known example of a Hellenistic city; Didyma’s enormous oracular Temple of Apollo; the vast site of Aphrodisias, with its magnificent sculptures and well-preserved stadium; and Bodrum’s Museum of Underwater Archaeology, Prof. Hirschfeld’s research base. Limited to 14 participants!
