The Historic RHINE: Basel to Amsterdam (cruise)

Dates: Monday, May 6, 2019 to Sunday, May 19, 2019 (13 days)
Tour Leader: Barry Strauss

The AIA’s first cruise along the Rhine and Moselle Rivers will be hosted by Barry Strauss, a historian of ancient Greece and Rome, and two additional guest lecturers. Join them and explore the region’s ancient Roman heritage and 20th-century military history for twelve unforgettable days aboard the luxurious, 45-suite Royal Crown riverboat.

Enjoy gorgeous scenery, dine in a historic castle, visit vineyard estates to taste regional wines, and sample local craft brews. Cruise from Basel to Amsterdam and visit classic highlights such as Strasbourg, Mainz, and the fairytale castles of the romantic Rhine; several well-preserved ancient Roman cities; and important sites from World War II, including General Patton’s famous Third Army crossing in Oppenheim and Operation Market Garden at Arnhem.

On many days, you will be invited to choose the (included) excursion activity that best suits your interests. Some excursions explore ancient Rome’s impact on the region, such as Augusta Raurica, the largest Roman ruins in Switzerland, with one of Central Europe’s best-preserved Roman theaters; and Germany’s Roman ruins at Trier, garrison at Bodobrica, and Xanten Archaeological Park and openair museum. Other excursions delve into World War II history along the Rhine and Moselle, from Arnhem’s Airborne Museum and Nijmegen’s Overloon Museum to the Oversteek Bridge, where American soldiers fought for the liberation of the Netherlands.

Your travel experiences will be enhanced by presentations from a stellar team of study leaders: Cornell professor Barry Strauss, a military historian specializing in ancient Greece and Rome; Colonel Kevin Weddle, Ret., a professor of military theory and strategy at the U.S. Army War College; and Carlos Eire, Professor of History & Religious Studies at Yale.

An optional, two-night, pre-cruise extension in Basel, Switzerland; and an optional, two-night, post-cruise extension in Holland are also available.
