International Archaeology Day is a day for organizations across the U.S. and Canada and around the world to raise awareness of archaeology and provide opportunities for the public to participate in archaeological activities. Above all, International Archaeology Day is a celebration of archaeology and emphasizes the idea that archaeology is everywhere.
Collaborating Organizations agree to hold events and/or promote International Archaeology Day to their members. Collaborating Organizations will be listed on the 2013 International Archaeology Day website.
To become a Collaborating Organization, please complete the Collaborating Organization agreement form online (http://www.archaeological.org/archaeologyday/agreementform).
There are no limitations on the types of archaeology themed events that can be held in conjunction with International Archaeology Day, though events that are open and advertised to the public are preferable. Popular events in 2012 included: archaeology fairs, lab open houses, classroom visits, special tours of museums or sites, symposia, conferences or meetings, student presentations, and lectures.
A centralized calendar listing all events (on www.archaeologyday.org) will be maintained by the Archaeological Institute of America (AIA). All programs designated as an International Archaeology Day event may be listed on the calendar. To list your event, go to archaeological.org/node/add/event and be sure to select “Archaeology Day” as your event type.
Note: Events must be approved by a moderator before they appear on the website. Events will be approved within 2 business days.
A lively International Archaeology Day blog will help raise the profile of the event and encourage participation. Collaborating Organizations may provide articles announcing events and significant updates to listed events. They are also required to provide a follow-up report post-event. Articles should be e-mailed to Meredith Anderson Langlitz (mlanglitz@aia.bu.edu).
Blogs should adhere to the following formatting rules:
In order to expand the reach of International Archaeology Day, the AIA created online participation opportunities. The two main ones were a scavenger hunt and the introduction of a Google Earth layer showing popular archaeological sites throughout the U.S. and Canada.
Similar activities will be organized for 2013, but if you have suggestions for other digital initiatives, please contact AIA Director of Programs Ben Thomas (bthomas@aia.bu.edu). Major additional components may depend on the AIA procuring a digital sponsor for International Archaeology Day.
On International Archaeology Day 2011 the AIA unveiled a new Google Earth layer showing popular archaeological sites throughout the U.S. and Canada. We then asked the public to send us suggestions for other sites to be included on the map. For International Archaeology Day 2013 we plan to release an expanded and enhanced map of sites in the U.S. and Canada based on the submissions we receive. Please note that all locations must be publicly accessible.
Explore the AIA's Archaeology of America and Canada layer on Google Earth. (If you do not have it installed, please download Google Earth.)
In addition to www.archaeologyday.org and the International Archaeology Day Blog, International Archaeology Day has a Facebook page (http://www.facebook.com/NatlArkyDay) and is on Twitter @ArchaeologyDay (https://twitter.com/ArchaeologyDay). Be sure to use the hashtag #IAD when tweeting about International Archaeology Day!
Partnering with the AIA offers an amazing opportunity to market your brand to an audience of over 4 million archaeology enthusiasts through our website and membership tools. Opportunities are still available for International Archaeology Day 2013. Sponsors will be listed prominently on the International Archaeology Day website and in associated promotional materials.
If you are interested in learning more about the benefits of sponsorship, please contact Meredith Anderson Langlitz (mlanglitz@aia.bu.edu or 617-358-5909).

Lead Sponsor
Lead Sponsorship is an incredible opportunity to promote your brand to an audience of millions! Contact Meredith Anderson Langlitz (mlanglitz@aia.bu.edu or 617-358-5909) for details.
Media Sponsor
International Archaeology Day 2013 is expected to surpass last year’s participation of approximately 60,000. Due to the public nature of the event, International Archaeology Day will provide incredible local news coverage opportunities.
There are several levels of media coverage ranging from feature article coverage, to social media and blog coverage, to pro bono ad placement for International Archaeology Day and one-time use of email lists. Please contact AIA Senior Programs Coordinator Meredith Anderson Langlitz (mlanglitz@aia.bu.edu) for more information on how to become a Media Sponsor.
Digital Sponsor
Virtual participation greatly expands the scope and breadth of International Archaeology Day and truly opens up the event for everyone and anyone to participate. Digital Sponsors underwrite the costs to add new online components to the celebration—this could include the scavenger hunt, downloadable apps, video and podcasts, virtual Q & A with professionals, and much more. If you are interested in learning more about becoming a digital sponsor, please contact the AIA Director of Programs Ben Thomas (bthomas@aia.bu.edu).
Promotional Materials Sponsor
International Archaeology Day is expected to grow annually and promotional materials make the event more fun for participants and help propel growth. Promotional Materials Sponsors pay for the production and distribution of materials to participants and will have their name or logo included on the product they are supporting. If you are interested in becoming a promotional materials sponsor, please contact AIA Senior Programs Coordinator Meredith Anderson Langlitz (mlanglitz@aia.bu.edu).
