Overview

The AIA takes a holistic approach to site preservation, using the organization’s strengths to fulfill the AIA’s mission and make the greatest overall impact. The program focuses on:

  • Education
  • Outreach
  • Facilitating the Spread of Best Practices
  • Direct Preservation

The AIA is uniquely qualified to carry out this Site Preservation because:

We are COMMITTED to and PASSIONATE about preserving and protecting the past. For 130 years the AIA has focused public attention on our irreplaceable archaeological resources and sites through PROGRAMS and ACTIVITIES that educate and inform people about the need for preservation and conservation of our cultural heritage.

We have the EXPERTISE for the task. Our network of talented and highly regarded experts in archaeological preservation and cultural heritage management are ready and willing to take on this challenge.

We reach a world-wide AUDIENCE OF MILLIONS through Archaeology magazine and the popular archaeological website www.archaeology.org to highlight sites that have been preserved, communicate the need for Site Preservation and solicit the support of our interested readers.

We create PARTNERSHIPS between people and organizations who are highly dedicated t0 saving our heritage and professional archaeologists and other experts who can carry out sustainable preservation efforts to the highest standards. An example of such an AIA program is educating U.S. troops headed for areas with at-risk sites about local cultural heritage and about preventing its unnecessary destruction.

We INSPIRE people through our many outreach activities, including an international tours program that take travelers to spectacular sites in the company of leading archaeologists, to connect with our shared heritage and rally around the essential cause of Site Preservation.
