Public Archaeology Volunteer Field Excavation Program
Sponsored by Colonial Dorchester State Historic Site
Sunday, October 6, 2013 to Sunday, December 1, 2013

Location:
Colonial Dorchester
300 State Park Road
Summerville, SC 29485
United States

This year's focus will be on expanding the current units at Lot 52 and attempting to
further explain the mysteries behind the uncovered brick floor and foundation discovered
there in 2006. Lot 52 is the site of the residence of Joseph Blake, Jr. who was a wealthy
Lowcountry planter who resided part-time at Dorchester between 1720s-1750s.
Excavations will be held during select days (mostly Sat./Sun.) throughout the two-month
period. Prior experience is necessary to take part in the active dig, but the general public
is encouraged to come out and either assists with screening or observes and learns about
archaeological methods and practices. For further information, contact Larry B. James,
Archaeologist at Colonial Dorchester, 300 State Park Road, Summerville, SC 29485,
