Stephen Batiuk, University of Toronto, discusses the role that viticulture (grape and wine production) played in the Early Bronze Age (3200-2000 BCE) migration of the Early Transcausasian Culture into eastern and Syro-Anatolia. The migrants were able to maintain cultural independence in their new home regions for almost 1000 years. The archaeological record reflects the changes that occur as wine transforms from a luxury item to a secular commodity in the local political economies of the time.
