Siem Reap (Angkor Wat)

The 20th Congress of the Indo-Pacific Prehistory Association (IPPA)

Roger Blench and Fredeliza Campos would like to run a session entitled Archaeomusicology in Southeast Asia. The session would focus on all aspects of identification of past musical practice in the Indo-Pacific area. This would cover historical documents, finds and various representations of musical instruments in the region, as well as interpretations of prehistory based on synchronic ethnography. The session is also open to investigations of cultural performances in prehistory, such as dance and vocal music.

If you are interested and would like to participate or present a paper in this session, please contact:

Communications (including Siem Reap conference January 2014) and membership

IPPA holds international congresses every 3-4 years. Past congresses have been held in the Philippines (1985), Japan and Guam (1987), Indonesia (1990), Thailand (1994), Malaysia (1998), Taiwan (2002), Manila (2006) and Hanoi (2009). IPPA also produces the peer-reviewed online Bulletin of the Indo-Pacific Prehistory Association.

Siem Reap Conference 12-18 January 2014

The 20th Congress of the Indo-Pacific Prehistory Association will be held in Siem Reap (Angkor), Cambodia, from Sunday 12 to Saturday 18 January 2014. The proposed schedule gives people weekends to travel to and from Cambodia. At this stage it is envisaged that there will be a gentle ‘starting program’ on the first Sunday (morning registration, afternoon opening plenary address and evening welcome event) followed by four full days of sessions, with the middle Wednesday 15 January clear for local tours/time out. At present we are planning four consecutive blocks of four or five parallel sessions each day, broken up by snack and lunch breaks. Departures are scheduled from Saturday 18 January.

The venue will be the APSARA facilities in Siem Reap, near Angkor. You can see the location at But please note that APSARA is not in the town centre – most delegates will not wish to walk as it is more than one km away. We plan to use shuttle buses from hotels to the site.

Siem Reap is easy to get around and has many hotels and hostels at all levels of comfort and expense (, also Lonely Planet, TripAdvisor, etc.). We advise you to book early.

You can fly direct to Siem Reap from many parts of Asia (e.g., Hong Kong, Korea, Malaysia, Singapore, Thailand, Vietnam) or you can fly via the Cambodian capital Phnom Penh ( Siem Reap also has excellent medical/hospital facilities as well as a wide range of restaurants and tourist attractions in addition to the huge Angkor complex, which will take you several days to see in full if you are really keen.  The town and Angkor are quite safe (taking normal precautions – Cambodia is currently at the lowest travellers’ risk-level on the Australian Department of Foreign Affairs scale) and overall are extremely cheap to visit.

Information about registration fees and how to pay by credit card using a secure website will be announced here very soon (hopefully early May). All presenters at the congress will be required to hold paid-up Rate A or Rate B IPPA membership and to pay registration fees of A$100 (Rate A) or $50 (Rate B) (see links below). We will also announce information about hotels, how far from the venue, costs, and whether or not they take credit cards, as soon as we have them from the Cambodian team. If you have questions concerning the Siem Reap conference program (details to be announced soon) please contact Ian Lilley <>
