The San Luis Obispo County Archaeological Society (SLOCAS), in partnership with the Guadalupe-Nipomo Dunes Center, will be hosting the second annual Archaeology Day at the San Luis Obispo Mission Plaza to introduce kids and kids- at- heart to how archaeologists study the past.
This year’s event will focus on how history is revealed by using archaeological methods. Archaeologist will share their knowledge about the materials and cultures found on the Central Coast.
Demonstrations with hands-on educational activities will be led by archaeologists. Participants will excavate, sift soils to reveal artifacts, record and interpret artifacts discovering clues about their potential use and place in time through the archaeological process.
“This is a great opportunity to learn about a profession and activities that aren’t typically available to the public and not widely taught in public elementary schools,” says Doug Jensen, Director of the Guadalupe-Nipomo Dunes Center and SLOCAS Board member.
The public will be able to interact with archaeologists who will engage visitors in discussing their local projects, enhanced by exhibits highlighting different aspects of archaeology.
All materials and equipment will be provided and the event is free.
