Download as PDF Saving Irish Sites! In April 2011, the AIA added two more archaeological sites, both located in Ireland, to the growing list of projects being supported by the Institute’s Site Preservation Program. Money to help save the Irish sites was raised through a special pledge drive held at the AIA Annual Spring Gala. The two sites, the Blackfriary at Trim in County Meath and the Dominican Priory at Tulsk in County Roscommon, are…
On June 27, 2011 after a brief introduction, the Chair, Katharine Reid, opened the Open Session of the Closed Meeting of the Cultural Property Advisory Committee about the extension of the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) (1989, 2006) with Bolivia about restrictions on the import of historical, ethnographic, and archaeological cultural objects into the United States. A list of speakers was provided and the speakers were given an hour for all the presentations. The first speaker…
Summary of the project The goal of the project was to build a replica of a Chalcolithic roundhouse within the roofed and fenced visitor area of the site of Kissonerga-Mosphilia near Paphos in tandem with a computer reconstruction of the building’s interior, complete with all objects in situ. The impetus behind the project was to increase understanding and appreciation of Cypriot prehistory, and to raise awareness of cultural heritage issues through employing tourism and educational…

Download as PDF Saving the Past The AIA's Site Preservation Program was created to safeguard ancient sites, educate people about the importance and need for preserving archaeological heritage, and involve local communities in the protection and management of sites in their area. The program's first grants were awarded to the site of Assos in Turkey and the Easter Island Statue Project (featured in the Archaeology, Nov/Dec 2009, edition of "Dispatches"). In November 2009, new…
My first field school with the Amarna Project in Egypt was truly a life-changing experience. Not only was it a first step into my intended career, but it was a character-building environment that changed perspectives about myself and my world. Stepping into the unknown with a dozen strangers takes a great deal of mental fortitude alone, especially when that unknown turns out to include temperatures of 120˚ F and a striking new culture. However, the…

Since reporting to the AIA in June 2010, we have made an impressive amount of progress towards the goal of building a replica of a Chalcolithic roundhouse within the roofed and fenced visitor area of the site of Kissonerga-Mosphilia near Paphos. The site was excavated by Professor Edgar Peltenburg of the University of Edinburgh from 1979–92 and is one of the largest and most important Chalcolithic settlements on the island, with preserved structures dating from…
The area around the village of Kissonerga near Paphos, Cyprus, is rich in prehistoric remains but these small-scale and dispersed sites are often difficult for the general visitor to appreciate. In order to increase understanding of their archaeology and raise awareness of their cultural heritage issues, there is a major project in progress under the directorship of Lindy Crewe of the University of Manchester to integrate the archaeology of Kissonerga into an accessible narrative and…
The audience at Tuesday evening’s Archaeological Institute of America presentation at Boston University confronted some stunning evidence of what the chairman of the AIA Site Preservation Committee, Paul Rissman, calls “desecration.” Photographs of sites in Cambodia showed statues and reliefs smashed to pieces, stone heads and bodies hacked off by looters. These dramatic images were part of an informative presentation by Erin Linn of Heritage Watch, an NGO operating in Cambodia to prevent the loss…
