Project Description
This is an archaeological study abroad course, not a typical field school. Though we will not be excavating, we will be venturing through Upper Paleolithic caves, talking to archaeologists and geologists as well as artisits. Providing a once in a lifetime trip and college credit at both the undergraduate and graduate level.
Have you ever imagined yourself crawling through caves in France? Many thousands of finger scrawls - left 15,000 years ago - coat the roof of the cave and loom over your head. In front of you, dozens of handprints mark the rock wall. In the chamber on your left, prehistoric illustrations of large game elegantly lope across the cave. This course analyzes the archeological and art historical context of Paleolithic rock art and considers the function of symbolism as communication throughout human history. We will journey through original and reconstructed rock art caves across southern France with pit stops at medieval castles, and cathedrals, followed by a stop in Paris to explore the museums and synthesize our studies by applying the course material in contemporary contexts.
