Project Description

SHARP (the Sedgeford Historical and Archaeological Research Project) is a long-term, independently-run archaeological project. Our primary objective is the investigation of the entire range of human settlement and land use in the north-west Norfolk parish of Sedgeford. Established in 1996, SHARP is one of the largest independent archaeological projects in Britain and is firmly rooted in the local community.

We offer a wide range of excavation and non-excavation opportunities for our volunteers. We also run a range of quality courses on environmental archaeology, unlocking Sedgeford's medieval past, landscape and non-invasive archaeology, photogrammetry, and introduction to human remains. No experience is necessary for any of these courses.

For those of you who are new to excavation we offer our Basic Excavation and Reording Techniques course. This week-long course will teach you everything you need to know and you'll be digging along with the rest of the team from day one!

Period(s) of Occupation: Middle Anglo-Saxon Medieval

Notes:
Our current focus is on an extensive mid-Anglo-Saxon malthouse complex. We are also opening a new trench for this season to investigate why the settlement shifted in the 11th Century.
