Project Description

PRAEDIA is a cooperative project that aims to shed light on the building history of Pompeii’s Regio II by focusing on the houses, shops, and workshops aligned along Via dell’Abbondanza and Via di Nocera. PRAEDIA is a cooperation between the Archaeological Park of Pompeii, the school of history and archaeology at the University of Pisa, the SMART Laboratory for Theoretical and Computational Chemistry of the Scuola Normale at Pisa, and the Italian National Institute of Geophysics and Vulcanology. Our work started in 2017 with three main goals. On a first level, we intend to gather detailed insight into the buildings in this region, including – but not limited to – the largest complex in the area, the so-called Praedia of Iulia Felix. This will hopefully lead to a more nuanced understanding of the building history in this area of the site, which was located in the liveliest commercial district only a short distance from the city gate and the main entertainment facility, the amphitheater. Finally, we plan on developing more sophisticated and more flexible instruments for the collection and display of visual, quantitative, discursive, and archival data.

The deadline for applications is 31 March 2019.
