The Department of Anthropology at the University of Maryland invites you to be a part of our 2019 archaeological field school! Come be a part of researching the history and preserving the heritage of a 200-year-old African-American community in Easton, Maryland. The intensive, three-week field school devotes eight hours daily to on-site 3-D Scanning, scan processing, research, and community engagement. We will focus this year on scanning a variety of standing structures and heritage landmarks that are part of this community. Students will learn to use a 3D laser scanner including how to set up and process scans. They will also develop skills in relating the past to diverse audiences as we put together an interpretive public program to conclude the field school. This is a chance to incorporate technology in archaeology in a setting outside the traditional classroom. The scanning portion of the field school will take place in Easton while the processing of scans using the SCENE software will be at the University of Maryland College Park (UMCP) campus. There will be no excavation during this three-week field school.
