The Department of Anthropology at the University of Nevada Las Vegas will offer a 6 credit, five-week field school from June 2-July 6, 2019.  Investigations will focus on several Pueblo II and (A.D. 1000-1150) habitation sites associated with the Virgin Anasazi culture. Students will learn the fundaments of archaeological excavation techniques, mapping, record-keeping, and material processing and identification.

The project area is located on the Shivwits Plateau in northeastern Arizona, within the newly established Parashant National Monument.  We will stay approximately 65 miles south of St. George, Utah and 1.5 miles from the north rim of the Grand Canyon, at a base camp provided by the National Park Service.  Cabins, running water, and electricity will be available to support the field school, though students will stay in their own tents.

In addition to several day trips, a long weekend trip will be taken to the slot canyons of Antelope Canyon, and to the Hopi Mesas where the probable descendants of the Virgin Anasazi live.  The trip will include a Walpi, a Hopi village that has been continuously occupied since A.D. 1680.

Cost: $1200 + tuition and fees.  This cost includes meals, transportation to and from the site, and transportation and lodging for the Antelope Cave/Hopi Mesas field trip.  (Note: Contact Dr. Harry for information about scholarships available through the Department of Anthropology to help defray these costs)
