Hanfmann Lecture Subcommittee

George M. A. Hanfmann was Professor of Fine Arts at Harvard University, Curator of Classical Art at the Fogg Art Museum, and Field Director of the Sardis Excavations in Turkey. The Hanfmann Lectureship was established in 1988 by his students and friends in order to honor him and his outstanding contributions to classical (especially Anatolian) archaeology, and Greek, Etruscan, and Roman art. Scholars who hold the Hanfmann Lectureship specialize in one or more of the varied subjects to which Prof. Hanfmann made contributions, e.g. Etruscan sculpture, Roman sarcophagi, Anatolian city planning, Hellenistic survivals in Byzantine art, Near Eastern narrative, and ancient technology (especially metallurgy). There is no expectation that the nominees will be senior scholars: the lectureship is open to interesting scholars of all levels --junior, middle, and senior. The Hanfmann Lecturer is chosen by the Hanfmann Lectureship Subcommittee of the Lecture Program Committee. The Subcommittee provides nominations for the Hanfmann Lecture each year, which are in turn approved by the Lecture Program Committee. At least two nominations are appreciated, in case the Committee’s first choice cannot serve.

Pomerance Science Medal Committee

Pomerance Award for Scientific Contributions to Archaeology. The Committee for the AIA Pomerance Award for Scientific Contributions to Archaeology invites nominations for this annual award (where it is agreed there are candidates of sufficient merit). Eligibility is not restricted to members of the AIA, and candidates for the medal may be sought internationally with no geographical limitations. The recipient may be a professional or amateur scientist, or a team, whose interdisciplinary work with archaeologists merits recognition for distinguished and sustained achievements in archaeological science. Persons who have received the Gold Medal of the AIA are not excluded from eligibility. Previous winners of the Pomerance Award are ineligible. Nominations are requested each year for consideration for the award. Nominations are requested by a date in early April each year: e.g. https://www.archaeological.org/awards/pomerance. The Pomerance Science Medal Committee may also make nominations. They may also deem there are no candidates of sufficient merit in any year. Once nominated, a nominee remains under consideration for the year of nomination and two further years (3 years in total). After three years names drop off the list and are only considered again if nominated again. The exception is that any nominee who comes second in any year will be carried forward to the following year regardless. The Committee keeps a list of past nomination lists so that the committee can review these in terms of new nominations.

Program for the Annual Meeting Committee

The Committee has broad responsibilities for organizing the academic program for the Annual Meeting of the Institute. This includes selecting papers, colloquia, posters and workshops; and determining the format and scheduling for the presentation of this scholarship. The Committee determines time limits for all presentations. In a handful of cases—e.g., the Gold Medal Session—some other approved entity accepts a narrowly specified colloquium or group of papers. In such narrowly defined cases, the job of the Committee is not to accept or reject, but to suggest revisions to the proposed abstracts.
